Mission and Objectives
Celebrate our innovation heroes: Provide a high-profile, public forum to celebrate the innovations of our Airmen.
Solve hard problems: Identify avenues to increase lethality and cost-effectively modernize in the short term.
Innovation without borders: Spur innovation outside of individual roles, organizations and silos toward greater good.
Design the future: Invest in projects to learn from successes and failures.
What is Spark Tank
Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson kicked off the Air Force’s Spark Tank competition in September, 2017 with a goal to “unleash the innovative capacity of our Airmen.” Through the Spark Tank program, Airmen compete and pitch their ideas much like an entrepreneur would make a pitch to a venture capital firm. The Air Force has recognized that venture-backed start ups are innovating at 10x the speed of other organizations, and by employing this model we hope to encourage intrapreneurship, retain innovators, and speed adoption of emerging technologies, especially those developed by Airmen to bring game changing impact to our Force.
The inaugural Spark Tank competition will take place February 22, 2018 at the AFA Orlando Air Warfare Symposium. We received pitches on a wide variety of concepts.
Submit a Proposal
The intent of this competition is to spur innovative ideas, followed by their operational implementation, across the Enterprise in which it belongs. Submissions are expected to tie directly to at least one of the following of SecAF/CSAF priorities and should be submitted through the Airmen Powered by Innovation (API) portal site.
- Restore readiness – to win any fight, any time
- Cost-effectively modernize – to increase the lethality of the force
- Drive innovation – to secure our future
